Custom Orthotics

Custom comfort to relieve pressure and pain in your spine, knees, ankles and feet.

Custom-made orthotics provide individualized comfort and support, which can relieve pressure and pain in your spine, knees, ankles and feet.

What does an Orthotics fitting look like?

For custom-made orthotics to fit you properly, Dr. Rodney in North York Orthotics will perform a gait scan (it’s a computerized examination of the way you walk and stand) as well as an automated 3D casting of your foot. That way, we have information about both the dynamic and static issues with your feet, allowing us to make a better pair of orthotics for you.

Will insurance cover custom orthotics?

Most extended health care (EHC) plans cover orthotics. Please check the requirements and stipulations of your plan before your orthotics assessment.

Ask your insurance company:

  • How much is covered?
  • Do you require a prescription for the orthotics, and if so, who can make that prescription?
  • Which health care providers are allowed to make and distribute the orthotics?
  • What forms are required for reimbursement?

FAQ

You should buy a shoe with a neutral base. Some shoes have a built-in sole that mildly addresses some standard foot issues. However, if the ground is not neutral, it makes the orthotics less effective.

Yes! If you stand or walk all day, as is the case for most: teachers, factory workers, trades workers, etc., and your gait is improper, a pair of custom-made orthotics is essential. They turn any ordinary pair of shoes into a corrective pair that addresses explicitly your biomechanical needs. They reduce stress on your body over the long run and prevent injuries as well.

Custom-made orthotics are made specifically for you. Over-the-counter orthotics or prefabricated orthotics are not made just for you, and though they may address some of your biomechanical needs, they often do not meet all of your needs.

It is best to wear them as much as possible. When you wear your orthotics, the biomechanical problems are being fixed, and when you stop wearing them, the issues persist.

You likely will. Orthotics are a lot like prescription eyeglasses. When you wear glasses, they correct your vision.

Likewise, when you wear your orthotics, your biomechanical needs are being corrected, which reduces strain on your body.

When your gait has been corrected for a long time, any inflammation caused by the poor foot biomechanics may be reduced, and you may feel less or no pain, but eventually, the poor biomechanics that caused the issue in the first place will likely return.

Your Extended Health Coverage (EHC) will determine what requirements you will need to provide them with for the cost to be covered. However, if no EHC is being utilized, no prescription is necessary.

It usually takes about two weeks to get a pair of custom orthotics made. However, it can be as short as one week. Rush orders can be turned around in a few days for a surcharge.
